ENQUIRE

£65.00 per person

Following on from our first sell out Fishers X Suffolk Birding Explorer Tour, we are delighted to announce our next nature tour; taking place in the autumn, where we will be birding in another wonderful wild area of Suffolk.

Our guide will once again be the internationally renowned Brian Small. With over 50 years of watching birds behind him, Brian has been a professional ornithologist for the past 15 years. Prior to that he was a photography and art teacher for 12 years in Framlingham and lives near Southwold, Suffolk with his wife and is a very keen patch birder.

He has guided bird tours since 2000, leading over 100 tours to 30 countries, including Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Georgia and New Mexico. He is particularly interested in bird identification and has written numerous papers for various magazines on the topic. He is currently chairman of the Suffolk Ornithologists Records Committee and has also served on the British Birds Records Committee.

An Autumn walk at Dunwich Beach and Forest

A morning exploring the varied coastal habitat north of Dunwich on the Suffolk coast, where autumn migration will be in full swing, with birds moving south to winter quarters in Africa or arriving to spend the winter on Dingle Marshes.

We will meet at The Ship in Dunwich and be briefed by Brian on the mornings activities whilst enjoying coffee / tea and bacon sandwiches.

Our walk will then start at the beach car park, looking beyond Sole Bay towards Southwold, then heads north along the shingle beach and shore pools towards Walberswick. Out to sea there may be Gannets and Terns, whilst on the saline lagoons numerous wildfowl, Herons, Egrets and Shorebirds feed; Marsh Harriers quarter the reeds and Snipe crouch almost invisibly in the saltmarsh.

At the halfway point it's elevenses, when we can enjoy some Fishers Negronis and sausage rolls from Friday Street Farm Shop.

Once we reach Dingle Hills, we cut inland through the reeds, where there is a good chance of Bearded Tit and maybe Bittern, before turning south to walk back towards the village through Dunwich Forest, with fine views over the reedbeds and marshes. Woodpeckers, Treecreeper, Thrushes and Goldcrest are often found in the oaks and pines.

The walk will end back at the Ship, when it will be time for some Fishers G&T's and a fish and chip lunch.

Walking distance is c. 3 miles.
